Ironclad Agent (formerly Ironclad Assistant) is a conversational page in Ironclad where you can ask questions about your contracts and workflows in plain language, instead of navigating to a specific tab or report to find what you need.
Use Case
A Legal Operations Manager wants to know how long approvals are taking across her team. Rather than opening Insights and building a report, she opens Ironclad Agent and asks the question directly.

Ironclad Assistant is becoming Ironclad Agent on October 8, 2026
Release: This article describes features and functionality planned for our October release. Some features may not be available until October 8, 2026.
On October 8, 2026, Ironclad Assistant will become Ironclad Agent.
Ironclad Agent will build on Ironclad Assistant’s search and question-answering capabilities and will also route requests to specialized agents. Users will be able to describe what they need in plain language, such as finding contracts up for renewal, starting a new contract request, reviewing a contract, or analyzing contract data.
For organizations that enable the Ironclad Agent homepage, Ironclad Agent will become the default homepage for users on October 8. Users can also access it from the sidebar and through a floating access button and side panel while working in Ironclad. Users can manage their own homepage preference with the Set Agent as my default home setting in personal settings.
Admins can manage the organization-wide homepage experience under Company Settings > Ironclad AI > Ironclad Agents:
Disabling the homepage hides the Agent tab, but users can still access Ironclad Agent through the sidebar and via MCP.
The Enable Ironclad Agent setting controls access at the company level. Turning it off disables Ironclad Agent, AI Search, and MCP access for all users in the organization.
Enable Ironclad Agent
To enable Ironclad Agent:
- Click your profile icon in the top right corner, and select Company Settings from the dropdown menu.
- Click Ironclad AI in the left sidebar menu.
- Under Ironclad Agents, toggle on the Enable Ironclad Agent setting.
Access Ironclad Agent
Assistant appears in the top navigation bar, alongside Dashboard, Insights, and Obligations.
To open Assistant, select Agent in the top navigation bar.
To open Agent automatically when you sign in, set it as your default home page. See Set Ironclad Agent as Your Default Home Page.
Use Ironclad Agent
The Ironclad Agent page opens to a single input where you enter your request in plain language. Enter your question or request, then submit it to receive a response.
Agent is conversational: you can follow up on a response to refine or narrow it, rather than starting over with a new request.
The panel on the left of the page lists your previous conversations. From this panel, you can:
- Start a new conversation
- Search your conversations
- Return to an earlier conversation to review it or continue it
How Ironclad Agent Handles Queries
Ironclad Agent handles a request in one of two ways:
- Answering directly. Assistant finds the relevant contracts, workflows, and data and returns an answer, with the records and context behind it.
- Routing to an agent. When a request calls for a specific capability, Assistant hands it to the Ironclad agent that handles it, so you can move from an answer to the next step without leaving the conversation. Admins may need to enable certain AI agents before it's available to users through this feature.
Example Questions
Ironclad Agent answers questions about your contracts, your workflows, and the data inside them. It finds the relevant records and returns a contextual answer, with summaries and snippets from the source.
Questions Assistant can answer include:
- Which contracts are up for renewal next quarter?
- What are our payment terms with this vendor?
- Are there any high-risk clauses in this agreement?
- Who needs to approve this agreement next?
- What is the latest activity on this workflow?
- How many of my in-flight contracts are in the review stage?
Ironclad Agents and Features
When a request calls for a specific capability, Assistant routes it to the Ironclad agent that handles it. Which agents are available to you depends on which features are enabled for your company and on your permissions. Newly released Ironclad agents become available through Assistant as they ship.
Individual agents may have their own scope, permission requirements, and limitations. See the agent's article for details.
