This article explains how to configure obligation notifications. You can create reminders, choose recipients, customize the email message, and control when notifications are sent.
Use Case
At Classics Inc., the legal operations team tracks post-signature obligations across active agreements. An administrator configures obligation notifications so contract owners, business stakeholders, and assigned users receive regular reminders about obligations that are due soon or already overdue. This helps the team follow through on commitments, reduce missed deadlines, and improve accountability.

Configure Obligation Notifications
Obligation notifications let you send recurring email reminders for obligations that need attention. You can use the default reminder options or create a custom reminder if you need a different schedule or scope. By default, obligations are configured for Due in 7 days, Due in 30 days, and Overdue. If none of these options meet your needs, you can create a custom reminder.
Before you create a reminder, decide who should receive it and what information they need. You can also choose which properties to include in the email so recipients can quickly understand the obligations in the reminder.
Test emails do not follow the configured reminder schedule. When you send a test email, Ironclad immediately sends a preview to your email address.
- Open your profile menu, and then select Company Settings > Notifications.
- Click the Obligations tab.
- Toggle on Email me when an obligation is assigned to me if you want to receive an email with a link whenever someone assigns an obligation to you.
- Click Add reminder.
- Choose the reminder recipients in the To field. If you are not an administrator, you can only send reminders to yourself. If you are an administrator, you can send reminders to:
- Individual users
- Groups
- Specific roles, such as Workflow Owner
- User properties tied to Ironclad users
- Customize the email message so recipients understand what the reminder covers and why they are receiving it.
- Open the Reminder Schedule dropdown, and then choose when to send the reminder. You can set the cadence to:
- Weekly
- Monthly
- In the Properties Added dropdown, select up to five properties to include for each obligation listed in the email.
- In the Filters section, define the rules that control which obligations appear in the reminder and when the reminder applies.
- Click Send me a test email to preview the reminder. Ironclad sends the test email to your email address for review. The preview does not apply the reminder schedule. It sends an email immediately with all obligations currently meeting the criteria.
- Click Create when you finish configuring the reminder.
