Summary
This article walks you through how to create an obligation.
Use Case
At Classics Inc., a legal operations specialist needs to track a vendor’s reporting requirement after a contract is signed. They create an obligation, assign an owner, set the timing, and link it to the correct contract. This helps the team track the task and follow through on the contract requirement.

Create an Obligation
You can create an obligation from the Obligations tab and link it to a contract. During setup, you define the obligation details, choose an assignee, and set when the obligation should happen.
When you assign the obligation, Ironclad can also update access. If the assignee does not have Edit access to the associated record, Ironclad grants that access when you create the obligation.
- You can create an obligation two ways. Form the Obligations tab, and from the contract itself.
- Obligations Tab: Click the Obligations tab, and then click New Obligation in the top right corner.
- Contract: On the Dashboard, click the contract you want to create an obligation for. Click the Obligations tab on the right, and then click the plus sign > Add manually.
- Enter a Name, Description, Type, and Status.
- Select an Assignee from the dropdown of Ironclad users. If the assignee does not have View access to the associated record, Ironclad grants it when you create the obligation.
- Search for and select a Parent Contract. (If you are creating an obligation directly from the contract, you can skip this step.)
- Select the Trigger that determines when the obligation should be completed.
- One Time: The obligation happens one time.
- Recurring: You define the frequency and rules.
- Conditional: You add a condition description and a due date after the condition is met.
- Perpetual: The obligation is ongoing.
- Click Create. The obligation is created and added to your Obligations dashboard.
