Summary
This article walks you through creating a document template. Document templates can be used in Clickwrap workflows and CLM legal centers. You can create new document templates, and you can edit, delete, and duplicate existing ones. You can also view a document template’s usages.
Once you create your document templates, you can create your legal center.
Use Case
At Classics Inc., a legal manager wants to create a legal center so customers can easily find and review the company’s public legal documents in one place. To prepare for launch, they gather the documents they want to publish, create each one as a document template in Ironclad CLM, and make any needed updates using the native editor. They can either upload existing documents or draft new ones directly in the editor, depending on how the content is being prepared.
Once the templates are reviewed and published, the legal manager creates the legal center and adds the document templates to it. This gives Classics Inc. one central place to manage document versions internally while making the approved documents available externally through the legal center.

Create a Document Template
A document template is a reusable source document that you create and manage in Ironclad so it can be used exclusively in legal centers and Clickwrap workflows. It gives your team a controlled starting point for drafting, editing, and versioning documents.
A Note on Legal Centers
To set up a legal center, we recommend first gathering the legal documents you want to publish and creating them as document templates in Ironclad CLM. Once each document has been drafted, reviewed, and published, you can create your legal center and add those documents to it. (Publishing a document version does not make it publicly available on its own; it becomes visible to external visitors only after it is included in a legal center or Clickwrap workflow.)
- Click on your profile icon in the top right corner, and then select Company Settings > Document Templates.
- Click the Add document template button located in the top right corner.
- Upload your document or click Create a blank template to draft your template in the editor.
- Click the title in the top left corner to edit the default title. This title will be the titled displayed if you add the document template to a legal center.
- Make any edits to the document as needed.
- Click Save in the top right corner to save your draft.
- Click Publish located in the top right corner to publish your draft. Publishing a document version does not make it publicly available on its own; it becomes visible to external visitors only after it is included in a legal center.
Edit a Document Template
- Click on your profile icon in the top right corner, and then select Company Settings > Document Templates.
- Click the document template you want to edit. A panel displays on the right with a list of the document template’s usages.
- Click Open.
- Make any edits to the document as needed.
- Click Save in the top right corner to save your draft.
- Click Publish located in the top right corner to publish your draft.
- If you want the version to be marked as a major version, toggle on Publish as major version. A major version creates a whole-number update, such as v1 to v2. If you leave this setting off, the update is published as a minor version, such as v1 to v1.1.
Duplicate/Delete a Document Template
- Click on your profile icon in the top right corner, and then select Company Settings > Document Templates.
- Click on the three stacked dots next to the document template you want to delete or duplicate.
- To delete the document template, click Delete and confirm the deletion.
- To duplicate the document template, click Duplicate.
View a Document Template’s Usage
- Click on your profile icon in the top right corner, and then select Company Settings > Document Templates.
- Click the document template whose usage you want to view. A panel displays on the right with a list of the document template’s usages.
- Click the number next to any usage to open a page listing each instance, with a link to view it.
