This article will walk you through how to update a workflow's properties (metadata) and documents. It covers editing agreement details in Edit Information, uploading and managing document versions, attaching documents that stay out of the signature packet, and resetting a document from its template.
Use Case
Negotiations moved your agreement past its first draft. You need to correct properties, upload the counterparty's latest redlines, or start over from the template.

Update a Workflow Using Edit Information
Use Edit Information to change the agreement details captured as properties.
Note:
If your workflow’s document is based off a template, when you upload a new version of the document, it’s saved as a new version and is no longer generated from the template. Updates made directly in the document won’t update your properties in Edit Information, but updates made in Edit Information will still update the document. Learn more about comparing document versions.
To update a workflow’s properties:
- Click on the workflow you want to edit. A summary window displays on the right.
- In the summary window, click the Open overview page indicated by a two arrows icon.
- In the Properties section, click Edit to open the Edit Information modal.
- Edit the agreement details.
- In the After updating… section, select whether or not you would like to change turns and reset approvals:
- Select whether you'd like to change the turn to your counterparty or company. This is useful if you want to reflect that the turn has changed from being counterparty to company, or vice versa.
- If you are an administrator or workflow manager, select whether or not you want to reset all approvals. This is useful if the changes represent material changes that you want all parties to review the document again.
- Add a comment describing the changes you made.
- Note: You can add emojis and tag other Ironclad users in the comment box.
- Click Update Information.
To confirm, open the Activity Feed and check that a comment with your description and a copy of the updated document appears. You can filter Properties to see all changes made through Edit Information.
Note:
Resetting all approvals doesn’t reset clause approvals.
Update a Workflow’s Documents
You can update your workflow documents in Ironclad when they are in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format. These are the file types supported for Document Preview and in-product editing. Other supported upload or attachment types must be downloaded to view or edit.
You can also download a document, edit it, and upload the new version of the agreement. Once you upload a new version of the document, it is saved as a new version and is no longer generated from the template.
To update a workflow's documents:
- Download your document from the workflow page.
- In the Documents section, hover over the document, click the More actions menu (vertical ellipsis icon), and click Download.
- Edit your document in Editor or Microsoft Word: in the Documents section, hover over the document, click the More actions menu, and click Edit. To edit in Microsoft Word, in the Editor select the download icon and click Edit in Word.
- To edit or comment in Ironclad Editor, in the Documents section, click Edit or comment indicated by a pencil icon.

-
- Upload new versions of the documents: on the workflow, click Upload in the Documents section, then click Upload New Version on the document you want to provide the latest redlines for. You can also select the dropdown next to an individual document and select Upload new version.
- Select the new version of your document.
- Note: The file type must be .docx, .doc, or .pdf, but it can differ from the original document's file type.
- If you want to add additional documents to the signature packet, click Add Additional Documents indicated by a plus sign.
- If you want to rename a document, click the three stacked dots next to it and click Rename.
- If you want to remove a document that is no longer needed, click the three stacked dots next to it and click Remove.
- Note: This is only available for documents that are not templated documents.
- In the After updating… section, select whether or not you would like to change turns and reset approvals:
- Select whether you’d like to change the turn to your counterparty or company. This is useful if you want to reflect that the turn has changed from being counterparty to company, or vice versa.

A comment is added to your workflow’s Activity Feed with the comment you left in the previous step and a copy of the updated document.

Attach and Exclude Documents in a Signature Packet
Release: One or more of the following features and functionalities will go live on August 13, 2026. To learn more about what's included in our August release, refer to What's New in Ironclad: August 2026.
Attached documents can be excluded from being sent out with the signature packet in a workflow configuration.
Users with access to Workflow Designer can drag documents into the Included or Excluded list under Signature Packet Documents in the Sign tab, and can add file attachments to the packet from the same section. Learn more about configuring Sign tab settings.
Once the document's file property is in the Excluded list, you can attach the file to your workflow without it joining the signature packet.
Note:
You can add a file attachment property to your launch form to allow users to add file attachments. However, only the following file types are included in the signature packet:
Reset from Template
Any participant in the workflow can use the Reset from template feature on any document in the workflow as long as:
- The document was first generated from a template AND
- The latest version of the document is not from the template.
Note:
If a document is manually edited, re-uploaded, or regenerated outside the template system, the link to the original template is broken. As a result, the Restart from template option will not appear for that document in the workflow.
- Click the workflow you want to edit to open its overview page.
- On the workflow overview page, go to the Signature Packet section and click the More actions icon (vertical ellipsis) next to the document you’re resetting.
-
Click Reset from template to open the Start over from company paper modal.
- Enter a Reason for starting over.
-
Under After starting over…, select one or more of the following options:
- Change turn to [Company].
- Allow approvals to reset. Reset excludes clause approvals. Visible to users with Workflow Management permissions only.
- Click Submit.
Once you submit the reset, a comment is added to your workflow’s Activity Feed and a copy of the updated document.
