AI Credits Transition to Paid Usage on September 1, 2026: Starting September 1, 2026, eligible AI agents will move from the current uncapped trial to credit-based usage. Each eligible agent action will use a set number of AI Credits from your account’s shared balance. Your platform edition may include AI Credits, and you can purchase additional credits as your usage grows. After your included balance is depleted, additional AI agent usage will incur a cost through pre-purchased credits, on-demand billing or pause until more credits are added, depending on your account settings. Credit rates vary by agent and action. AI Credits apply to eligible agents such as Renewal Agent, Intake Agent, and Archive Agent. They do not apply to every AI-powered feature in Ironclad. Please reach out to your Ironclad representative for more information.

AI Credit Overages
An overage is extra AI agent use after your platform-included and purchased credits reach zero.
Ironclad uses credits in this order:
- Platform-included credits
- Purchased or pre-planned credit packs
- On-demand credits, if enabled
When the first two balances are empty and the AI credit cap is off, on-demand credits let agent use continue. This extra use is an overage.
Platform-included credits and purchased credit packs are not overages. They are used first.
When the cap is on, no on-demand credits are used. Credit-dependent agent use pauses when the first two balances reach zero.
Overage Billing
On-demand credits are pay-as-you-go credits. Overage use appears in your account usage after on-demand credits are used.
The current list rate is $1 per on-demand credit when it applies to your account. Your contract controls billing timing and overage rates. Contact your Ironclad account team to confirm your terms.
AI Credit Cap
The AI Credit Cap controls on-demand credits only. It does not block platform-included credits or purchased credit packs.
An Administrator can turn the cap on or off in the AI Credit settings for the account. The cap is off by default.
- Cap off: Agent use can continue after included and purchased credits reach zero. On-demand credits are used and billed as you go.
- Cap on: Agent use pauses when included and purchased credits reach zero. No on-demand credits are used. This prevents new pay-as-you-go charges.
Refer to Cap AI Credit Usage for more information.
Avoid Overages
Here are some helpful tips on how to avoid overages:
- Check your shared balance and usage often.
- Watch which agents use the most credits.
- Buy credit packs before your balance reaches zero if you need ongoing use.
- Turn on the AI Credit Cap to block on-demand charges.
Account Administrators can monitor usage by agent. Refer to View AI Credits and Usage for more information.
