AI Credits Transition to Paid Usage on September 1, 2026: Starting September 1, 2026, eligible AI agents will move from the current uncapped trial to credit-based usage. Each eligible agent action will use a set number of AI Credits from your account’s shared balance. Your platform edition may include AI Credits, and you can purchase additional credits as your usage grows. After your included balance is depleted, additional AI agent usage will incur a cost through pre-purchased credits, on-demand billing or pause until more credits are added, depending on your account settings. Credit rates vary by agent and action. AAI Credits apply to eligible agents such as Renewal Agent, Intake Agent, Archive Agent, Contract Family Agent, Contract Review Agent, and Analytics Agent. Demo and Sandbox usage does not consume AI Credits; the pooled balance and usage reporting apply only to production instances.
There are two different types of features that consume AI Credits:
Action-Based Agents
Action-based agents consume AI Credits each time they perform a task. This means usage grows with the number of actions completed—for example, when the Intake, Renewal, Archive, or Contract Family Agent performs its designated task.The following agents consume AI credits per action:

| Renewal Agent | Generates or displays Renewal Briefs that summarize upcoming renewals, key terms, risks, and opportunities to support renewal, renegotiation, or exit decisions. |
| Intake Agent | Processes uploaded third-party contracts, extracts key details, and pre-fills intake fields to reduce duplicate data entry and errors. |
| Archive Agent | Extracts and verifies key metadata from signed contracts before archiving them, keeping repository records accurate, searchable, and AI-ready. |
| Contract Family Agent | Automatically organizes related contracts—such as MSAs, SOWs, and amendments—into parent-child hierarchies to provide a structured view of the full vendor or customer relationship. |
Subscription-Based Agents
Subscription-based agents use a flat, one-time AI Credit deduction for each user, per year. This model applies to the Contract Review Agent and Analytics Agent, so credit usage is based on the number of users who have access rather than the number of individual actions they perform.
The following agents consume AI credits on a subscription basis:

Features That Don’t Consume AI Credits
Not every AI-powered feature in Ironclad requires AI Credits. The following features are included and do not require AI credits:
- Standard Import: Upload contracts to the Repository without AI-generated predictions.
- Smart Import and Extract Metadata: Analyze uploaded or existing contracts and extract metadata as part of the platform subscription.
- AI Clauses and Custom AI Clauses: Detect and classify contract language in AI Playbooks and Smart Import. Configure and train clauses using examples without consuming pooled AI Credits.
- AI Playbooks: Detect clauses and apply playbook rules during contract review without consuming AI Credits.
- Workflow Designer Agent: Builds workflow configurations from natural-language requests, helping admins create, edit, audit, and troubleshoot workflows directly in Workflow Designer.
- Ironclad Agent: Orchestrates contract and workflow intelligence, answers questions, and routes users to specialized agents to help them take action.
- Search Agent: Finds relevant contracts, clauses, and terms through natural-language search across contract metadata and document text.
