How Do Obligations Permissions Work?
Obligations permissions are tied to the contract's permissions and obligation assignments.
If you can edit a contract, you can create and edit obligations linked to that contract.
If you can only view a contract, you can only view its obligations—unless you're assigned to a specific obligation, in which case you can edit it even with view-only contract access.
Create, View, Edit, and Delete Obligation Permissions
| Action | Required Permissions |
|---|---|
| Create an obligation | Edit the contract record |
| View an obligation | View or edit the contract (or be assigned to the obligation) |
| Edit an obligation | Edit the contract (or be assigned to the obligation) |
| Delete an obligation | Edit the contract (or be assigned to the obligation) |
Create Obligations
Users with edit access to the parent contract can create obligations.
If you're assigned to a conditional obligation, you can create associated obligations to track individual instances (e.g., each security audit, each new subprocessor added, each SLA breach).
Edit Obligations
You can edit an obligation if you have edit access to the parent contract, OR if you are assigned to the obligation (even with view-only contract access).
View Obligations
You can view an obligation if you have view or edit access to the parent contract. If you're assigned to an obligation, you automatically gain view access to the parent contract (if you don't already have it).
Delete Obligations
You can delete an obligation if you have edit access to the parent contract, OR if you are assigned to that obligation (even with view-only contract access).
You can delete obligations:
- Individually — Delete a single obligation from its detail panel
- In bulk — Delete multiple obligations at once from a contract
Examples:
- Alice (Editor): Has edit access to "Renewal Agreement with Acme Corp" → Can create and edit any obligations tied to that contract
- Bob (View-only, assigned): Has view-only access to the same contract → Cannot create obligations, but if assigned to one, can edit it
- Carol (View-only, not assigned): Has view-only access to the contract → Cannot create or edit any obligations
Obligation Extraction Permissions
Obligation extraction uses AI to automatically identify and populate obligations from a signed contract. Instead of manually creating each obligation, you can extract them in bulk from the document.
Required Access:
You need both:
- Extraction access permission — A separate permission from contract editing
- Edit access to the contract — Same requirement as creating obligations manually
This permission is granted by default to users in admin groups.
Configure Extraction Access
Admins can grant this permission to groups:
- Click on your profile icon in the top right corner, and then select Company Settings > Groups. All of the groups in your company’s instance are displayed.
- Select a group, and then click Configure Group.
- In the Obligation Extraction dropdown, select Yes.
