This article will walk you through how to create and manage obligation types and properties.

Once a contract is signed, obligations define required actions for each party, ensuring compliance and outlining consequences for non-fulfillment. Ironclad offers the ability to create, manage, and track obligations using both predefined and custom types and properties.
Obligation Types
Obligation types enable you to categorize each obligation by its type. It helps you search, filter, sort, and manage saved views more efficiently. The predefined obligation types are a suggested list of common contractual obligations. You can further customize the name and properties of these predefined obligation types in Data Manager to best fit your organization’s needs.
You can also create additional obligation types in Data Manager.
Obligation Properties
Obligation properties are pieces of information you want to collect and track. You can use properties to create, track, and filter an obligation throughout its lifecycle. There are eight predefined obligation properties, and you can create more in Data Manager.
Property | Description |
---|---|
Name | A name for the obligation. We recommend a name that is unique and easily identifiable. This is a required field. |
Description | A description for the obligation. |
Status | The status of the obligation. |
Assignee | The assignee of the obligation. |
Frequency | The frequency in which the obligation should take place. This is an optional field. |
Due Date | The date the obligation must be completed. This is an optional field. |
Contract Name | The contract in which the obligation is mentioned or associated to. This is a required field. |
Type | Obligation Type is a required property that lets you categorize each obligation by its type. It helps you search, filter, sort, and manage saved views more efficiently. The available Obligation Types are a suggested list of common contractual obligations, designed to help you classify obligations in a way that best fits your organization’s needs. |
For each obligation type, you can remove properties or view property details. Data Manager provides a central location to manage all your obligation properties.
Create an Obligation Type
- Click on your profile icon located in the top right corner of Ironclad. Navigate to Company Settings > Data Manager.
- From the dropdown at the top, select Obligation types.
- Click Create obligation type.
- In the Name field, enter the name of the obligation type.
- In the Description field, enter a description of the obligation type.
- Configure the properties included in the obligation type.
- To add a property, click Add property, search for the property, and select the property to add it to the obligation type.
NOTE
To add a new obligation property to the obligation type, you must first create the obligation property in Data Manager. To avoid losing your progress, we recommend saving your obligation type first, then creating the obligation property, and finally adding it to your new obligation type. - To remove an existing property, locate the property you want to remove and click the three stacked dots next to it. Click Remove from type > Remove.
- To add a property, click Add property, search for the property, and select the property to add it to the obligation type.
- Click Save.
Edit an Existing Obligation Type
While Ironclad provides predefined obligation types, you can edit them to better fit your company’s needs.
- Click on your profile icon located in the top right corner of Ironclad. Navigate to Company Settings > Data Manager.
- From the dropdown at the top, select Obligation Types.
- Click the obligation type you want to edit. You can then edit the Name, Description, and Properties.
- Configure the properties included in the obligation type.
- To add a property, click Add property, search for the property, and select the property to add it to the obligation type.
NOTE
To add a new obligation property to the obligation type, you must first create the obligation property in Data Manager. To avoid losing your progress, we recommend saving your obligation type first, then creating the obligation property, and finally adding it to your new obligation type. - To remove an existing property, locate the property you want to remove and click the three stacked dots next to it. Create an Obligation Property
- Click on your profile icon located in the top right corner of Ironclad. Navigate to Company Settings > Data Manager.
- From the dropdown at the top, select Obligation properties.
- Click Create obligation property.
- In the Name field, enter the name of the property.
- In the Type dropdown, select the property’s data type. This field cannot be modified after creation.
- In the Description field, enter a description of the property.
- Click Save.
Edit an Existing Obligation Property
- Click on your profile icon located in the top right corner of Ironclad. Navigate to Company Settings > Data Manager.
- From the dropdown at the top, select Obligation properties.
- Click the obligation property you want to edit, and then click Edit (indicated by a pencil icon).
- Edit the property’s Name and Description. You cannot edit the property’s data type or schema.
- Click Save (indicated by a check mark icon) and confirm your changes. Changes to the obligation property will be applied across all instances of its usage in Ironclad.
