This article will walk you through how to choose between HTML and PDF format for your Clickwrap templates.
There are two format options for Clickwrap templates: HTML and PDF. Each format offers unique benefits depending on your use case. By default, we recommend you use HTML which allows for a better end user experience and makes it easier to use Clickwrap to manage your legal content. To get started using HTML templates, refer to Use the Clickwrap Editor.
We recommend PDF format if you don’t have internal resources to format HTML documents, or if you are working in a highly regulated industry where the signed document must match a precise government document. PDF templates do not support tokens. To get started using PDFs, refer to Use PDFs in Templates.
Both HTML and PDF templates allow for full customization using the API.
NOTE
Once you create a template, you can’t convert it to the other type. Instead, create a new template with the new file type and replace it in the clickwrap group. Once that is complete, archive the original template to save the version history.
Which Format Should I Use?
There is no concrete rules, but there are a few questions you can ask to help you choose which format will best fit your use case:
Do you have internal resources to help create and manage HTML templates?
- If you have technical internal resources, consider an HTML template.
- If you do not have internal resources, consider a PDF template.
Do you need your signed document to precisely match a document?
- If you need your signed document to precisely match a document (e.g. government documents), consider a PDF template.
- If you do not need your signed document to perfectly match a document, consider an HTML template.
Do you use Clickwrap or a third party for content management?
- If you use Clickwrap for content management, consider an HTML template.
- If you use a third party for content management, consider a PDF template.
Do you want full style control in the Clickwrap UI?
- If you want to use any style available in the UI, consider an HTML template.
- If you are okay only using Checkbox per Template and Combined Checkbox for all Templates, consider a PDF template.
