This article shows you how to connect external eSignature providers to Ironclad CLM and manage them alongside Ironclad Signature. It covers what to prepare before connecting, step-by-step connection instructions for DocuSign, Dropbox Sign, and Adobe Sign. We’ll also cover how to add, remove, relink, and set a default eSignature provider.
Use Case
Your company uses one or more external eSignature providers and you need to connect them to Ironclad, manage which accounts are linked, and understand which provider each workflow will use.

Release: One or more of the following features and functionalities will go live on August 13, 2026. To learn more about what's included in our August release, refer to What's New in Ironclad: August 2026.
How eSignature Provider Selection Works
An eSignature provider must be configured to use Ironclad CLM. Your account comes pre-configured with Ironclad Signature, and you can connect multiple external providers in one company instance.
There are two settings that determine which eSignature provider sends a given signature packet:
- Default: Admins set a default eSignature provider on the Manage eSignature accounts page. Every workflow will use the default provider unless configured otherwise.
- Workflow Designer > Sign settings: Selecting an eSignature provider at the workflow level overrides the default set for that workflow.
If a signature request can’t be sent with the workflow’s configured eSignature provider, it falls back to the default eSignature provider. Workflow Designer will warn the user on the Sign step of any workflow whose configured eSignature provider was removed.
Limitations
- Each company is limited to one Ironclad Signature account.
- All signers on a single signature packet must use the same signature provider.
- Ironclad doesn’t send or manage signature request emails that are part of third-party integrations. We don’t monitor or maintain external accounts and their settings. You will need to manage configurations such as automated reminders and email customizations in your external account.
Provider-Specific Signer Experience
The signature provider configured for a workflow determines the signer experience:
Ironclad Signature: Internal signers can sign directly from the workflow in Ironclad. Open the workflow, go to the Sign step, and select Sign next to your name.
External eSignature provider: Signers use the signing experience provided by the configured external provider. Follow that provider’s instructions for completing the signature.
Use the provider-specific instructions below to configure the option that matches your organization’s signing process.
Before Connecting an eSignature Provider
Warning: Single sign-on (SSO)
isn't supported when connecting an eSignature provider to Ironclad.
The account you use to connect the provider must not require SSO. Use
a dedicated eSignature account for the connection, with SSO disabled
and the required permissions, such as
signatures@yourCompany.com. This ensures signers receive
signature requests from a company-level account rather than a personal
account.
Make sure you meet the account requirements of the eSignature provider you’re connecting:
| Provider | Account Requirements |
|---|---|
| DocuSign |
|
| Dropbox Sign |
|
| Adobe Sign |
|
Warning: Do not link the same DocuSign service account to both your Production and Demo Ironclad instances. Using one DocuSign account across environments can mix Production and Demo signature packets. For testing in a Demo environment, create and link a separate DocuSign Sandbox/Developer account. This keeps Demo signature packets separate from Production packets.
Connect DocuSign
DocuSign offers two connection types:
| Connection Type | Use Case |
|---|---|
| Individual Account | Choose this option when you want to link one DocuSign account to Ironclad. It doesn't require a claimed domain or a DocuSign Organization Admin account. |
| Admin Account (DocuSign Organizations) | Choose this option when your organization uses DocuSign Organizations to manage DocuSign users and route signatures through the appropriate DocuSign account. This option requires a DocuSign Organization Admin account and at least one claimed domain in DocuSign. |
Warning: If your DocuSign tenant doesn't have DocuSign Organizations configured, you don't have a DocuSign Organization Admin account, or your domain hasn't been claimed in DocuSign, do not use the Admin Account connection. Selecting it without these prerequisites may result in a bad request error.
Connect an Individual DocuSign account
To connect an individual DocuSign account to Ironclad:
- Sign in to Ironclad.
- Click your profile icon in the top right corner, and select Company Settings from the dropdown menu.
- Click Integrations.
- Under Signature & Acceptance, click Manage eSignature accounts.
- Click New account in the top right corner.

- Click Continue to be taken to DocuSign, where you’ll be prompted to sign in using the account you want to link.
Once you’ve logged in to DocuSign, you’ll be redirected back to Ironclad. If your eSignature provider was successfully connected, you’ll be able to see it included in the table of eSignature providers on the Manage eSignature accounts page.
Warning: We don’t recommend making changes to in-flight signature envelopes within DocuSign. Doing so could result in the packet getting stuck in a Retrieving Signed Document stage, and becoming irretrievable.
Connect DocuSign Organizations and Route by User
With DocuSign Organizations, you can link multiple users and route each signature request through the relevant DocuSign account and user combination. Accounts and organizations can be granted admin-level access, which unlocks advanced workflow routing or benefits multi-account use cases.
Before you start, link a DocuSign Organization Admin account and claim your domain in DocuSign. For domain setup, refer to DocuSign’s documentation.

Switch to a Different Account with the Same eSignature Provider
Use these instructions when your company changes which DocuSign, Dropbox Sign or Adobe Sign account is linked. For example, when you move from a personal account to a service account. Relinking updates the credentials for your account by having you sign into the new account.
Warning: Before you start, verify that the new account has at least the same access level as the current eSignature account. Switching to an account with less access can disrupt functionality.
To switch eSignature accounts:
- Sign in to Ironclad.
- Click your profile icon in the top right corner.
- Click Integrations.
- Under Signature & Acceptance, click Manage eSignature accounts.
- Select your configured eSignature provider.
- Click Relink account in the right side panel.
- Click Continue to confirm that you’d like to relink your account.
- Note: Workflows already out for signature continue without disruption unless the token of the previous account was invalidated. New eSignature requests will use the relinked account.
- Sign into the new account.
Set Default eSignature Provider
To set the default eSignature provider:
- Click your profile icon in the top-right corner, then click Company Settings > Integrations.
- Under Signature & Acceptance, click Manage eSignature accounts.
- Note: The Manage eSignature accounts page displays your connected accounts, including each account's display name, provider, type, email, and date added.
- Click the eSignature provider you want to set as default.
- Click Set as default in the right side panel.
To confirm that your new eSignature provider account is set to be the default, check to see if it now has the Default label next to in the eSignature accounts table:
You can reset the default eSignature provider in the Manage eSignature accounts page at any time.
