Release: The following functionality will be live on November 5th. To learn more about the features included in our November release, refer to What's New in Ironclad: November 2026.
Summary
The Signer will sign outside of Ironclad setting lets you designate a signer who will complete the document outside Ironclad, such as through another signature provider or a manual process. The workflow remains in the Sign step while the external signature is collected, and a Signature Coordinator uploads the partially or fully signed packet to Ironclad.
Use Case
At Classics Inc., a counterparty prefers to use their own signing process. The Signature Coordinator marks the counterparty as signing outside of Ironclad, allows the company signers to complete their signatures in Ironclad, and uploads the completed packet after the counterparty returns it.

Configure a non-eSignature signer in Workflow Designer
- In Ironclad, click Workflow Designer.
- Select the workflow configuration you want to modify.
- Select the Sign tab.
- Under Signers, add a signer or edit an existing signer.
- Enable Signer will sign outside of Ironclad.
- Select Save.
Update a signer in an active workflow
- Open the workflow.
- Go to the Sign step.
- Add a signer or open the signer's options and select Edit.
- Enable Signer will sign outside of Ironclad.
- Save your changes.
If the signer was previously configured to sign through Ironclad, Ironclad updates the signer’s status to indicate that they will sign outside of Ironclad.
Understand signing order
External signers are handled separately from signers who sign through Ironclad:
- Signers who sign through Ironclad complete their signatures first.
- External signers are placed after Ironclad signers.
- External signers cannot be placed before or between Ironclad signers.
- If Collect signatures in order is enabled, the order applies only to signers who sign through Ironclad.
- Ironclad does not send an eSignature request to an external signer. The Signature Coordinator is responsible for obtaining the signed document and uploading it to the workflow.
Upload a packet signed outside of Ironclad
After the external signer completes the document, upload the signed packet from the workflow’s Sign step.
- Open the workflow and go to the Sign step.
- In the signature packet section, select Upload.
- Add the signed document or documents.
- Select Next: Select signers.
- Select the signers whose signatures are included in the uploaded packet.
- Review the uploaded packet.
If you select only some of the workflow’s signers, Ironclad saves the packet as partially signed and keeps the remaining signers assigned to the workflow. If you select all signers, Ironclad treats the packet as fully signed.
If a signature packet is already out for signature, Ironclad prompts you to cancel the pending signature packet before saving the uploaded packet.
Review document changes before confirming
Before confirming the upload, use the comparison options to review the returned document:
- Current packet displays the packet currently stored in Ironclad.
- Uploaded packet displays the packet you are uploading.
- Compare redlines highlights changes between the current and uploaded packets.
- Side-by-side displays the current and uploaded packets next to each other.
Review the comparison before confirming the upload, especially when the document was signed using a version supplied outside of Ironclad.
Manage cancellation emails
When you upload a signed packet, you can choose whether to send cancellation emails to the signers associated with the existing signature packet.
- For a partially signed upload, the option is selected by default.
- For a fully signed upload, the option is cleared by default.
Review the setting before confirming the upload. Turn off cancellation emails when the packet was completed outside Ironclad and signers should not receive a message indicating that their signature request was canceled.
The same cancellation-email option is available when you cancel a signature packet without uploading a signed packet.
Important considerations
- External signers must be placed after signers who sign through Ironclad.
- External signers cannot be interleaved with Ironclad signers.
- The workflow does not automatically advance to Archive when Ironclad signers finish. Upload the externally signed packet to complete the signature process.
- Existing workflow permissions continue to control who can upload a signed packet.
