Summary
This article walks you through how to to create a Contract Review Agent-ready playbook from your existing contracting materials using Playbook Agent.
Use Case
At Classics Inc., the legal team wants to create an NDA playbook without building every rule from scratch. They provide existing NDA templates, previously negotiated agreements, and relevant playbooks so the Playbook Agent can generate a first draft that reflects their preferred positions and negotiation patterns.

Before you begin
Gather the source materials you want Contract Review Agent to use. Include at least one of the following:
- Template documents: Your standard agreement
- Precedent files: Past contracts you'd consider gold standard
- Existing playbook: Guidelines or positions you use today
Use materials for the same agreement type whenever possible. For example, provide NDA materials when generating an NDA playbook.
Generate a playbook
- Open Contract Review Agent.
-
Click Generate a playbook.
- Enter a prompt describing the type of playbook you want to generate.
-
Select from the Repository or upload the source files you want the agent to use. You must select or upload at least one template document, precedent file, or existing playbook. The more files you provide, the better result the agent will provide.
- Review the selected files and confirm that they represent the agreement type and business context for the playbook.
- Click Generate playbook.
- Review the generated playbook when it is ready.
The generated playbook should include the agreement context and rules that Contract Review Agent can use during contract review. Review each rule for accuracy, especially the preferred language, fallback guidance, and instructions for clauses that are missing from a contract.
Review the generated playbook
Before using the playbook, confirm that:
- The agreement type is clearly identified.
- Rules use specific, action-oriented instructions.
- Conditional guidance uses clear if/then logic.
- Each rule includes a preferred position or preferred language.
- Fallbacks explain when they should be used and why.
- High-priority rules include a silence instruction when a clause may be missing.
- The playbook does not depend on external links or cross-references.
- The playbook is written in plain text and does not rely on complex tables or layouts.
Test and refine the playbook
- Upload a sample contract to Contract Review Agent.
- Run a redline using the generated playbook.
- Compare the output with the legal team’s expected redlines.
- Identify rules that are missing, unclear, or too broad.
- Update the playbook and run the same test again.
- Continue testing until the results consistently reflect the team’s approved positions.
Next step
After the playbook has been reviewed and tested, add it to the Playbook Library and use it to redline contracts in Contract Review Agent.
