This article walks you through how to extract obligations from in progress and completed contracts with Ironclad AI.
Use Case
At Classics Inc., a legal operations manager needs to capture post-signature obligations from a vendor contract. Instead of adding each obligation manually, they open the contract’s obligations list and use Ironclad AI to extract likely obligations into draft records. This helps them review obligations faster and keep the contract record up to date.

Before You Begin
Before extracting obligations, we recommend reviewing your obligation type settings.
As a best practice, we recommend starting by testing extraction on a few sample contracts, then adding Extraction Instructions to the relevant obligation type and re-testing iteratively until you’re happy with the results.
You can add up to 20 natural language instructions to optimize how the AI extracts the obligation type.
Extract Obligations from a Completed Contract (Record)
You can extract obligations from completed contracts using Ironclad AI. You define which obligation types you want to extract, and Ironclad AI extracts obligations from the contract using the parameters set within Data Manager. To learn more, refer to Create an Obligation Type.
- Open the workflow or record you want to review.
- Open the associated document. The document displays.
- Click the Obligations tab on the right.
- Click the plus icon in the top right corner.
- Click Extract obligations.
- Select the obligation types you want to extract.
- Click Continue, and then click Extract. Ironclad AI extracts the obligations and adds them to the contract. Ironclad assigns the obligations to the correct users based on your obligation type settings.
- If an obligation type is configured to require review:
- Click on a draft obligation.
- Review and edit the obligation details.
- Click Mark as Verified.
- Click on a draft obligation.
Extract Obligations from an In Progress Contract with Archive Agent
You can use Archive Agent to extract obligations from an in-progress contract.
In Data Manager, define the obligation types that you want to extract. You do this by configuring the obligation type’s workflow extraction rules for each of the obligation types you want to include. Ironclad AI uses those settings to extract obligations from the workflow. To learn more, see Edit an Obligation Type.
After the contract is signed, Archive Agent reviews it to confirm that the signed contract matches the metadata and extracts obligations.
- Open the workflow that you want to review.
- In the purple Properties synced by Archive Agent banner on the right, below Properties, click View.
- Review the extracted obligations and make any needed updates.
- After you review the suggestions and make any edits, click Archive to archive the workflow.
