This article goes over how obligations on Ironclad records sync to SAP Ariba. Ironclad currently supports syncing three obligation types: Milestone, Minimum Purchase Commitment, and Payment.
Use Case
After a contract is completed in Ironclad and synced to SAP Ariba, procurement still needs the contract's obligations: deliverable milestones, minimum spend commitments, and payments. These are reflected in SAP Ariba to track compliance and spend. Rather than re-entering those details by hand, obligation syncing propagates them automatically: any time a supported obligation is added, edited, or removed on a record, the change flows to the related SAP Ariba contract.

Enable/Access: Obligation syncing must be enabled for your company.
How Obligation Syncing Works
Once enabled, a sync is triggered any time a supported obligation is added, edited, or removed on a record. Where the obligation appears in SAP Ariba depends on its type:
| Obligation Type | Syncs |
|---|---|
| Milestone | Title, due date, payment amount, and verifier |
| Minimum Purchase Commitment | Total contract minimum commitment, per-line item minimums tied to a commodity code and product group |
| Payment | Payment amount |
Sync Milestone Obligations
A Milestone obligation tracks a deliverable and the payment tied to its completion. When you add a milestone to a record, it syncs to the Milestones section of the related Contract Terms (aka Contract Compliance) document in SAP Ariba.
To sync a milestone obligation:
On your Dashboard, click the record you want to sync to open its overview page.
Click the Obligations tab in the side panel.
-
Click Add obligation in the top right corner and select Milestone as the obligation Type.
Note: Any time a milestone is added, edited or removed from an archived record, it will trigger a sync with SAP Ariba.
-
Fill out the following required fields:
Name
Description
Linked Payment
Assignee
Due Date
Click Create obligation in the top right corner.
Upon refreshing the window, you should see the newly synced obligation under the Obligations tab > Milestone.
To verify that your obligation synced:
Open your Ariba Contract Workspace.
Click the Documents tab.
Click the Contract Terms document (may appear as Contract Compliance) and select Open from the dropdown menu.
Select Milestones from the left sidebar menu.
Check to see that your milestone was added in the Milestone Items table.
Sync Minimum Purchase Commitment Obligations
A Minimum Purchase Commitment obligation tracks the minimum amount your organization has committed to spend under the contract.
You can define commitments at two levels, and both sync to the Contract Terms document in SAP Ariba:
Contract (header) level: The total minimum commitment across the entire contract.
Line item level: A minimum spend commitment for a specific product, defined by its commodity code and the product group (the parent commodity code the item rolls into).
To sync a line item-level commitment:
On your Dashboard, click the record you want to sync to open its overview page.
Click the Obligations tab in the side panel.
Click Add obligation in the top right corner and select Minimum Purchase Commitment as the obligation Type.
Specify the product's commodity code and product group.
Enter the minimum spend amount.
-
Fill out the following required fields:
Name
Description
Linked Payment
Assignee
Due Date
Click Create obligation in the top right corner.
To confirm the sync, open the Contract Terms document in SAP Ariba and navigate to Limits. You should see the updated value under Minimum Commitment.
Sync Payment Obligations
A Payment obligation tracks a payment amount under the contract, which corresponds to the Contract Amount on the SAP Ariba Contract Workspace.
To sync a Payment obligation:
On your Dashboard, click the record you want to sync to open its overview page.
Click the Obligations tab in the side panel.
Click Add obligation in the top right corner and select Payment as the obligation Type.
Update the Payment Amount field.
-
Fill out the following required fields:
Name
Description
Linked Payment
Assignee
Due Date
Click Create obligation in the top right corner.
To confirm the sync, open the Contract Terms document in SAP Ariba and check that the Contract Amount reflects the updated payment amount.
Remove Synced Obligations
To remove a synced obligation from a record:
On your Dashboard, click the record you want to sync to open its overview page.
Click the Obligations tab in the side panel.
Select the obligation you want to remove.
Click Edit in the top right corner.
At the bottom of the side panel, click Delete obligation.
Click Delete to confirm your selection.
