Release: The ability to configure extraction instructions will be live on July 23rd. To learn more about the features included in our July release, refer to What's New in Ironclad: July 2026.
Summary
This article walks you through how to create an obligation type. When you create an obligation type, you also configure how Ironclad AI handles extraction, what default status new obligations use, whether review is required, and who should be assigned by default. To learn more about obligation types, refer to Obligations.
Use Case
At Classics Inc., a legal operations manager wants to track reporting obligations separately from payment obligations. They create a new obligation type for reporting so users automatically capture the right fields, route obligations to the right owners, and apply the right review rules. This helps the team keep obligation data consistent and easier to manage.

| Permissions | Admin role |
Create an Obligation Type
- Click on your profile icon located in the top right corner of Ironclad. Navigate to Company Settings > Data Manager.
- From the dropdown at the top, select Obligation types.
-
Click Create obligation type.
- In the Name field, enter the name of the obligation type. Use a simple, descriptive name. The name should clearly identify the kind of obligation the type captures.
- In the Description field, enter a description of the obligation type. Describe what the obligation type captures and why your team uses it.
- Configure the properties included in the obligation type.
-
To add a property, click Add property, search for the property, and select the property to add it to the obligation type.
Note: To add a new obligation property to the obligation type, you must first create the obligation property in Data Manager. To avoid losing your progress, we recommend saving your obligation type first, then creating the obligation property, and finally adding it to your new obligation type.
-
- Configure the Workflow Extraction Rules. Choose when Ironclad AI should automatically extract this obligation type from workflows. You can select:
- Always auto-extract
- Never auto-extract
- Auto-extract by workflow template
- Set the Default Status. This controls the starting status for obligations created with this type. You can select:
- Not Started
- In Progress
- Completed
- Compliant
- Out of Compliance
- Add Extraction Instructions. You can add up to 20 natural language instructions to optimize how the AI extracts the obligation type. We recommend starting by testing extraction on a few sample contracts, then adding guidance rules and re-testing iteratively until you’re happy with the results.
- Configure the Review Rules. Use review rules to decide whether obligations of this type are saved as drafts until someone confirms them, or automatically verified. You can require review for all obligations of this type, or never require review for this type.
- Configure the Default Assignee. You can define assignment rules across all contract types, or by specific contract type. You can assign obligations to the Workflow Owner or to a specific user. If you assign to Workflow Owner, you can also set a backup user in case the workflow does not have an owner.
- Click Save.
