What is the Archive Agent?
The Archive Agent is an AI-powered feature that automatically reads your signed contract documents at the Archive stage and populates workflow properties for you.
Manually archiving a workflow can take time. Teams must review the signed document, cross-reference it against existing fields, and type in values. This is a slow, error-prone process that delays getting accurate contract data into your Repository. The Archive Agent eliminates most of that work. Every archived record becomes immediately usable for reporting, renewals, obligation tracking, and downstream automation.
How Does it Work?
When you click Archive Beta on a workflow at the Archive stage, the agent runs three steps in the background:
- Prepares the document for AI reading: The agent processes the signed contract so it can be accurately read and analyzed.
- Analyzes your workflow metadata and archive form: The agent reviews the document alongside your existing fields, their helper text, pre-filled values, and data types, then proposes values for each field.
- Generates explanations and citations: The agent identifies conflicts with existing values, fills in missing fields, and records its reasoning and a source citation for every extracted value.
Once complete, you see a side-by-side view: the signed document on the left, proposed field values on the right. Review the suggestions, make any edits, and click Archive to archive the workflow.
What Can the Archive Agent Fill?
The Archive Agent can fill in the following:
- Standard workflow properties: Any out-of-the-box Ironclad field, such as counterparty name, counterparty address, agreement date, and more.
- Customer workflow properties: Anything custom you’ve added to grab structured data from your contracts.
- Archive-only properties: Custom fields that are only visible and editable at the Archive stage.
For every extracted value, the agent shows:
- Reasoning: A plain-language explanation of why it chose that value.
- Source citation: A link that scrolls the document to the exact location where the information was found, so you can verify it in seconds.
If the agent updates a value that was previously filled in, an Undo button appears next to that field so you can revert to the original value with one click.
How Do I Enable the Archive Agent?
To enable the Archive Agent, turn it on in Company Settings, Ironclad AI tab. Once enabled, any workflow that reaches the Archive stage will show an Archive BETA button alongside the standard Mark as archived option.

Tips for Best Results
- Review citations before archiving. The source links let you confirm the agent's work in the document itself — use them, especially for key dates and financial terms.
- Use the Undo button when needed. If the agent updated a field you had intentionally filled with a different value, undo restores your original entry without affecting other fields.
- Check archive-only fields. These fields are only surfaced at Archive, so the agent is often filling them for the first time. Give them a close look.
