Overview
If your contract includes a Governing Law clause where only the location changes, and that clause is shared across multiple workflow configurations, you can use global clauses with properties to automatically update the clause text based on Launch Form input. This approach is especially useful if you regularly update the clause and want those changes to apply across all workflows that use it.
Use Case
Classics Inc. manages contracts across multiple U.S. states and wants to standardize its Governing Law clause while still customizing it based on the applicable jurisdiction for each agreement.
Instead of creating multiple versions of the clause, Classics Inc. uses a global clause with a property for the state. When the workflow is started, the contract requester selects the appropriate state from the Launch Form (e.g., California, Texas, or New York). The clause text then automatically updates to reflect that state in the final contract.

Instructions
If your contract includes a Governing Law clause where only the jurisdiction changes, you can use global clauses with properties to automatically update each workflow’s clause text based on the Launch Form input.
- Click the Workflow Designer tab.
- Select the workflow configuration you want to update.
- Click the Document tab.
- Highlight the jurisdiction text that would vary in your clause, and then click Add Property.
- Type ‘Jurisdiction’ and click Create new property. Alternatively, if the property already exists in your configuration, you can select it instead of creating a new property.
- In the Type dropdown, select Text. Click Save.
- If there are subsequent references to the state, locality, or jurisdiction that you would like to update based on Launch Form input, repeat the process, selecting the Jurisdiction property for each instance.
- Highlight the entire clause and click Add Clause. The Add Clause panel displays on the left.
- Click New clause indicated by a plus sign.
- In the Type field, type ‘Governing Law’ and click Create “Governing Law”.
- In the Name field, type ‘Governing Law with Properties’.
- Click Next, and then click Save.
- Save and publish your workflow.
Result
A Governing Law global clause is created with a Jurisdiction property as a placeholder for the location.
When the workflow is started, the contract requester selects the appropriate state from the Launch Form (e.g., California, Texas, or New York). The clause text then automatically updates to reflect that state in the final contract.
Tips & Variations
- If your contract includes a Governing Law clause with variations to the clause text itself based on the locality, you can use conditions to control which version appears based on the Launch Form input.
