You can create and edit contract families for any given record by linking it with other records via the contract family UI. There are two types of relationships you can associate with a contract: child record and amendment.
Parent and child records represent a more specific type of contract relationship where the contracts directly reference each other and must be evaluated together. Child records are usually sub-agreements to the parent record.
Parent and amendment records represent a contract relationship where the amendment modifies the original parent contract. A parent can have multiple amendments, but each amendment can have only one parent.
To learn more about each of these and their function, refer to the Contract Families Overview.
Use Case
Classics, Inc. signs a Master Service Agreement (MSA) with a marketing vendor that outlines general terms for all future projects. Over time, the company creates multiple Statements of Work (SOWs) under that MSA, each covering a different campaign or service.
In this setup:
- The MSA is the parent record.
- Each SOW is a child record linked to the MSA.
- When a campaign scope changes, Classics, Inc. creates an amendment to an SOW. That amendment becomes a child of the SOW, forming a contract family within the larger MSA relationship.
By viewing these related contracts together, the legal and procurement teams at Classics, Inc. can quickly understand how each SOW and amendment ties back to the governing MSA, ensuring consistency, visibility, and compliance across all vendor engagements.

Add a Child Contract
Parent and child records represent a more specific type of contract relationship where the contracts directly reference each other and must be evaluated together. Child records are usually sub-agreements to the parent record. Each parent can have multiple children. Each child can have only one parent.
Child contracts can also be parents to other records, creating a contract family. When a record is a part of a contract family, in addition to the record’s direct parent and child records, you can see the entire contract family.
- To add a child record, click Add child > Child contract. You can then search for and select the record you want to create a relationship with.
Add an Amendment Contract
Parent and amendment records represent a contract relationship where the amendment modifies the original parent contract. A parent can have multiple amendments, but each amendment can have only one parent. When you link an amendment, Ironclad displays a side‑by‑side comparison of changed/new properties where you can select which values roll up to the parent.
For example, if you have an Order Form set to expire in 20 days and you create an amendment, when you link the amendment to the original Order Form, you will have the option to update the renewal date (and any other differing properties) to match the new terms defined in the amendment.
Note: Amendment functionality is currently available only on records. You can not designate amendments on the launch form.
- To add an amendment, click Add child > Amendment.
- Search for and select the record you want to add as an amendment.
-
The Amended Properties modal displays. Select which properties you want to update in the parent contract. Once selected, these values will become the new source of truth across Ironclad, updating all related reminders, filters, and dashboards. If you ever need to reference the original values, you can easily view them in the record’s Properties section. Currently, only properties, not clauses, can be rolled up. Workflow metadata (such as Time in Review, Signature Date, AI Prediction Date, etc.) are hidden because they are not typically amended. Of the lifecycle preset properties that affect contract status, only Expiration Date is supported for rollup at this time.
- Click Save.
Delete an Existing Contract Relationship
Note: Removing a contract will revert any data roll-up.
- To delete an existing relationship, click the three stacked dots located to the right of the record. Click Remove contract. If you try to remove an amendment that has rolled-up data, a reminder will appear before the amendment is removed.
