This topic will walk you through how to use the version history panel. This includes how to preview and restore a previous version of your workflow configuration.
Every time a user saves, publishes, or restores a version of their workflow configuration, a new version is created. When a new version is created, it is assigned a number. The number of assignments increases by full numbers and they do not regress when new versions are added. For example, if your current version number is 5, and you restore version number 4, the restored version saves as version number 6.
Workflow Designer’s version history enables you to view details about each previous version of your selected workflow configuration. You can then preview a version and revert your workflow configuration to that version.
Any changes made by your Ironclad team, as requested via your support contact, will appear under the “Ironclad Admin” user.

Enter/Exit Version History
The Version History Panel includes the following for each version of your workflow configuration:
- The editor’s name, timestamp, and version number.
- A custom description entered by the editor. This is optional.
- The exact configuration of the given version.
- A restore button to restore a previous version.
All previous versions of your workflow configuration are available in the Version History panel.
Note: While you are in the version history panel, you can make changes to any workflow configuration versions, but the edits won’t save to your current version. To make changes in the current, active version, exit the version history panel.
- Click the Workflow Designer tab.
- Select the workflow configuration you want to view the version history for.
- To open the version history panel, click the three dots located in the top right corner of the workflow configuration, and then click Open Version History. A panel opens on the right side of your screen.
- To exit the version history, click Exit Version History located in the top left corner of your screen.

You can preview a previous version if your workflow configuration and its associated launch form. This enables you to test the version before restoring it.
Note: While you are in the version history panel, you can make changes to any workflow configuration versions, but the edits won’t save to your current version. To make changes in the current, active version, exit the version history panel.
- Open the workflow configuration's version history.
- To preview a past version, click on it in the version history panel. The workflow configuration displays. You can collapse the panel while you preview the version by clicking the Collapse icon located in the top left of the panel.
- To preview a past version’s launch form and generated draft, click Preview Version located in the top right corner of your screen. This enables you to test the launch form and view a generated draft before restoring a previous version. To exit the preview, click Close Preview located in the top left corner of your screen.
Restore a Previous Version of Your Workflow Configuration
- Open the workflow configuration's version history.
- Before you restore a version, preview it. This enables you to see the workflow configuration, launch form, and generated draft.
- In the version history panel, hover over the version you want to restore and click Restore.
- A prompt displays. We recommend adding a clear description of what changes you made and why.
- Click Restore. Everything from the previous version is restored except for your playbook. You are taken to the Document tab, and your restore automatically saves, but does not publish.
- If needed, build out your playbook. When you restore a previous version of your workflow configuration, your playbook is not updated.
- If you are ready to publish the restored version, click Publish.
